Cudahy by map and Cudahy by population seem mismatched. A standard street map will show a mostly rectangular city with about six streets running in either direction and lot sizes that suggest warehouse and industrial buildings, and almost nothing providing housing for 26,000 people.
The streets are in fact residential. Cudahy is one of about a half-dozen L.A. County cities that was subdivided into large lots, sometimes one or two football fields deep. Homes and apartments, served usually by one private driveway, are built on these lots. Some lots will show a home up front and two or three behind. Some will have a dozen or more homes. Or an apartment complex.
About 9 percent of the housing units were built before World War II; about 31 percent between 1940 and 1960, and 25 percent between 1960 and 1980. Over the last two decades, Cudahy has constructed about 1,200 units. Lot of old suburbia, fair amount of new.
Some homes and apartments need repairs. Some are sparkling new and well kept. www.mccormacks.com
The state in 2010 counted 5,682 housing units: 1,712 single homes, 1,293 single attached, 2,263 multiples, 414 mobiles.
Warehouses and trucking firms can be found on the south side.
Served by Los Angeles Unified School District, which has passed several bonds to renovate and build schools. Sample academic rankings: Hughes Elementary, 20th percentile; Elizabeth Learning Center, lower grades, 10th percentile; upper (high school) 50th percentiles. See Schools.
Four homicides in 2005, one in 2004, two in 2003, three in 2002, zero in 2001 and 2000. Counts for previous years are 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 4, 3, 2, 5, 5. Security doors or gates spotted around town. See Crime.
Library. Three parks, one with a sports complex. Teen center, fitness center and boxing center. Two schools are located next to parks, which gives the kids more room to play. www.mccormacks.com
Small cities, like Cudahy, often do better than large cities on making improvements because they are in close contact with their residents and quicker to respond to civic needs.
Buses to downtown. Interstate 710 on the east side. Metrolink (commute rail) station in nearby Commerce.
