Hacienda Heights, population 53,122. Median age of residents is 37. Under 18 years, 25 percent. Over 55 years, 23 percent.

Rowland Heights, population 48,553. Median age 35. Kids 26 percent, 55 years, 18 percent.
Family oriented but the statistics suggest that many kids are growing up.

Hacienda Heights started to boom in the 1950s but got most of its housing in the 1970s and 1980s. Rowland Heights followed a similar pattern except its boom did not begin until the 1960s, about the time Highway 60 was built. www.mccormacks.com
These were decades of prosperity when homes started to grow bigger. Both communities have thousands of four-bedroom homes.
There is a lot of sparkle to these towns because they are so new and well-cared-for. In parts of Hacienda Heights, near Highway 60, some older faded housing can be found.
Both communities offer hill homes, some almost mansions, with views of countryside. In Hacienda Heights, one of the largest Buddhist temples in world. Striking, graceful building.
Many residents in Hacienda Heights want to incorporate the neighborhood into a legal city and bring development under tighter control but voters said no. Local groups sound out public opinion and offer advice to county politicians.
Hacienda Heights children attend Hacienda-La Puente Unified School District. Scores vary widely but many of the Hacienda Heights schools are landing in the 70th to 90th percentile. Voters in 2000 approved a $100 million bond to renovate district schools. www.mccormacks.com
Rowland Heights is served by the Rowland Unified School District, which also educates children from La Puente, West Covina and Walnut. Most of the schools are landing in the 40th to 60th percentile but some of the Rowland Heights schools are hitting the 80th and 90th percentiles. Rowland High is scoring in the 80th percentile.
Rowland voters in 2000 approved a $70 million renovation bond and in 2006 passed another renovation bond for $118 million. Both bonds passed by substantial margins, indicating strong support for education. See Schools.
Highway 60 to downtown L.A., 22 to 25 miles to the east, a long haul in rush hour traffic. City of Industry has many jobs, which means a short commute for many residents. Orange County and its job centers are just over the hills to south. Also within commuting distance, Ontario Airport and its jobs. Metrolink (commuter rail) to downtown L.A.
About six parks in each community, including a regional park that divides the two. Rowland Heights has a golf course on its west side. Shopping at Puente Hills Mall. Library in Hacienda Heights. Both neighborhoods are famous for their Asian restaurants and institutions.
