The Puente Hills divide the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County from Orange County. La Habra Heights is situated about the middle of the hills. Its neighbor to the south is the City of La Habra, which is part of Orange County. La Habra ... La Habra Heights ... some people confuse the two.

The first (Orange) is a middle-class city with stores; the second, an upscale community (L.A). with almost noa businesses (main exception: golf course). Adding to the confusion, the two towns share part of one school district.

La Habra Heights cultivates a style that might be called country secluded. Many streets have no sidewalks. Hedges or small groves of orange or avocado trees hide many homes. Some homes have gates. Having no stores, the town draws little commercial traffic. Commercial signs severely restricted. The roads curve and wind over hills and valleys thick with oak, manzanita and brush.

The state in 2008 counted 2,024 housing units: 1,992 single homes, 24 single attached, 8 multiples, no mobiles. Three-bedroom homes account for about 42 percent of the housing, four-bedroom homes about 34 percent and five-or-more-bedroom units, about 13 percent, census data shows. Lot size: minimum one acre. www.mccormacks.com

Some homes are knockouts: large, tastefully decorated. Many others fall into the category of upscale nice. A few homes are small working ranches. La Habra Heights is horse country.

Served by the Orange County schools districts of Lowell (elementary) and Fullerton Joint Union High (high schools). The two elementary schools in the Lowell district that serve part of La Habra Heights are scoring generally in the top 10 percent in the state. The older kids attend usually La Habra High School. See Schools.

For a fix on a particular address, phone the Lowell district at (562) 943-0211.

Crime rate low. Zero homicides in 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002, two in 2001 and 2000, zero in 1999, 1998, 1997, one in 1996, zero in 1994 and 1995. City contracts with the sheriff for police protection. See Crime.

Fire department has full-time professional who serves as chief. Rest are paid volunteers. www.mccormacks.com

Golf course. Many homes have swimming pools. One park. Horse trails. For the unusual, a large Buddhist temple, just over the northern border.

Main drawback if you work in downtown L.A: 24 long miles. Highway 60 can be picked up north of the city. But this town is really oriented to the east L.A. County and the Orange County job centers — shorter drive.
