L.A. City neighborhoods east of Beverly Hills. Mix of apartments,
single homes. For most part, upscale. Hancock Park was the creme de la creme of
old L.A. and still rates the adjective, opulent. www.mccormacks.com
But
in the peculiar nature of L.A., housing quality changes dramatically within the
space of five or ten blocks.
School
rankings high in the elementary grades. Crime statistics not broken out by neighborhood
but probably low-middling. These neighborhoods, like much of L.A., are safety
sensitive. Many homes and apartment complexes use security services or devices
such as gates. Also protected by L.A. police.
Wilshire
Boulevard runs from the ocean to the downtown. The Wilshire District starts at
the Beverly Hills border and runs east to about Western Avenue (although some
extend it farther). This section is famous for its high-rise offices (the
Miracle Mile) and its museums, including the County Museum of Art, the Page
Museum (fossils), Kaye Museum of Miniatures, the Petersen Automotive, the Craft
and Folk Art. Eons ago mastodons, sloths and other ancients blundered into the
La Brea tar pits, next to county museum.
Park
La Brea, located just north of Wilshire, consists of about 4,200 apartments,
divided among 18 buildings, 13 stories high. Gated. Cats yes, dogs no. Popular
with people working in the entertainment industry.
Immediately
east, straddling Third Street, is Hancock Park. Before World War II, this is
where many of the big shots and first families lived and even today it attracts
many well-to-do. Mansions. Manicured lawns. Lovely landscaping. Anchored by the
Wilshire Country Club. www.mccormacks.com
About
20 blocks to the south is Country Club Park, upscale, many large older homes.
Served by L.A. Unified School District.
Sample rankings: Hancock Park Elementary, 90th percentile; Wilton Place
Elementary, 50th to 70th percentile; Fairfax High, mostly in the 50th
percentile.
About
10 parks. Great shopping. Scads to do in and near Hollywood, a short distance
to the north. Farmers Market (restaurants and shops).
About
seven miles to downtown L.A. Many local jobs. Santa Monica freeway (I-10) to
south. Served by subway line to North Hollywood (more studios) and downtown
L.A. www.mccormacks.com
