Mission Valley runs along Interstate 8 from about Interstate 5 to about Interstate 15 and Qualcomm stadium. www.mccormacks.com

Although it has a population of 17,230, it is considered more of a business-hotel-shopping section than a residential.

But this is changing. In recent years, many apartment and condo complexes have been erected and residents, in some sections, are complaining about traffic. 2006 housing count: single homes zero, apartments or condos, 10,792.

Many singles or childless couples. Kids under 18 make up only 15 percent of total — low.

City wants more housing built near the trolley stations.

The valley takes in the Fashion Valley Mall and the Mission Valley Center (mall). About a half-dozen major hotels, a variety of restaurants, a movie complex, a skate park and a golf course. www.mccormacks.com

Major stores include Ikea, Costco, Lowe's, Wal-Mart, Borders and Barnes and Noble bookstores.

Qualcomm has a large facility in or near Mission Valley. Both sides of the freeway are lined with office and commercial buildings. Montgomery Field, to the north, is popular with private pilots. Businesses and plants are located around the airport. Also in the vicinity, Kearney Mesa with its industries and hospital complexes.

Mission Valley is sometimes called Mission Gorge. It was cut by the San Diego River and runs at the bottom of a long wide gorge or ravine overlooked on both sides by mesas. The padres built a mission at the east end; hence the name. The area is sometimes divided into Mission Valley East and MV West.

One of the best commutes in the county. Besides Interstates 5 and 8 and 15, Mission Valley is crisscrossed by Highway 163 and Interstate 805. Trolleys run from downtown San Diego up the valley floor and stop at the two malls and stadium and San Diego State Univ.

The Marine Air Station at Miramar, the University of San Diego, the University of California, San Diego State University and Sorrento Valley, job centers, are within a short drive. www.mccormacks.com

In 2001, the city opened a library in Mission Valley.

Summing up, great location for jobs and if you are new to the county, a good place to meet young and middle-aged professionals.
