neighborhood between San Leandro and Hayward west of Interstate 880. www.mccormacks.com
Older
residences. Many two-and three-bedroom homes with one-car garages. Full, mature
trees. Overhead utility lines. San Lorenzo got its great spurt just after World
War II, when 1,300 homes were built. Many were later remodeled and expanded.
Homeowners association works to keep appearances up and shape plans for housing
and commercial projects.
Some new
homes near Hesperian Boulevard along with apartment complexes. But San Lorenzo
is fairly stable. Lost 558 residents in 1980s, added 1,911 in the 1990s. The
2000 census counted 21,898 residents.

Served by
San Lorenzo Unified School District, enrollment about 12,000. San Lorenzo is
within 5 to 15 minutes of Chabot Community College and Hayward State
University. Schools include one charter, KIPP Summer Academy. See Schools.
In 2004,
voters approved a $49 million bond to renovate every school in the San Lorenzo
district.
Like other
towns, becoming more ethnically diverse, many immigrants among the newcomers. www.mccormacks.com
San
Lorenzo is governed from Oakland by board of supervisors. Lacking its own city
council, San Lorenzo rarely makes headlines and, indeed, the average East Bay
resident would probably have difficulty locating the town. Still, it offers
much in the way of affordable housing.
Good
commute. Short drive to Interstate 80, Oakland and Bay Bridge. BART stations in
nearby San Leandro. Many jobs around Oakland and Hayward airports. Check out
plane noise.
A member
of the Hayward Park and Recreation District. Many activities. Four community
parks, one with a lake. Golf course. Community swim center. Three of the parks
adjoin schools, an easy walk for the kids. Little League baseball diamonds.
Historic mansion open to public. Regional park and trails along the shore.
Shopping
along Hesperian Boulevard, which has a Home Depot and is building a Target.
Close to Southland Mall.

• School
district enrolls about 11,500 but numbers are slipping by about a 100 a year.
To raise enrollments and for other reasons, the district added an hour a day to
classes at the middle schools and for grades kindergarten through third.
• Small
shop centers on Bockman Road closed, the stores to be replaced by 81 townhouses
and commercial buildings.
• Ducking
out. Too many geese laying waste on playing fields and golf course, Park people
are rounding up many and shipping them to farm in sticks.
• Annual
spring cleanup: a time to paint over graffiti, pick up litter and tidy up. Free
garbage pickup. Also free garbage bags, gloves and refreshments.
