Zip Code: 94107

One of the classic neighborhoods of San Francisco. Compact, hidden, great views of downtown. Small, measuring about 12 blocks by 12 blocks. www.mccormacks.com

Many nice homes, a mix of Victorians and single homes, carefully and lovingly restored. In its past, Potrero Hill has housed several immigrant groups and is now favored by artists and professionals.

Generally located between Interstate 280 and Highway 101. Chavez Street (formerly Army) defines the south border, 15th Street to the north. Hilly, which accounts for much of the neighborhood's allure.

The freeways, rail tracks and the terrain combine to “wall” off Potrero Hill, to create physical and psychological boundaries that shield the neighborhood from the hustle of the city.

From its heights, Potrero has a view of downtown spread east to west, tall, imposing, and bright. The afternoon sun seems to light up the high-rise offices.

Some homes have views of the Bay and San Francisco to the south. Some look down on the Mission District. Homes on east side are shoehorned onto lots and served by winding streets. www.mccormacks.com

Sheltered by the hills from the fog. Warmer than other neighborhoods.

Library. Small stores. Three parks. Recreation center.

Easy access to freeways but many people take streetcars to work. The Third Street light-rail began service in 2007. Third Street, which runs north-south, is located just east of Potrero Hill.

Caltrain has station at 22nd Street near Interstate 280. Limited service to downtown (Giants Stadium) and south all the way to Gilroy with stops at SFO and San Mateo and Silicon Valley cities. Check out noise from trains.

Mission Bay, the new bio tech-medical complex and Giants stadium are located 15 blocks northeast of Potrero Hill. Homes, offices, a medical complex are also included in the Mission Bay development. All this has made this section a hot housing market. www.mccormacks.com

Much of the land directly east of Potrero Hill, now industrial-office-warehouse, may be converted into housing.

Residents are a vocal group and fight to preserve quality of neighborhood.

• To attract more students and for other reasons, Starr King Elementary, located in Potrero Hill, in 2006 started an immersion class in Mandarin and English.

• Potrero Hill in 2006 and 2007 had several shootings. Take care.

• Neighborhood to east of Potrero Hill sometimes included in PH. Others call it Dogpatch. www.mccormacks.com

• Power plant under construction near the Bay. To be fired up during periods of peak demand.
